We live our entire lives with an uninterrupted inner broadcast. It comments on everything, plans the future, chews over the past, and evaluates self and others. We are so familiar with this voice that we unquestioningly believe: “This is me.”
Yet, On No Mind begins with a disruptive question: “Who is thinking? That which knows thinking is happening—is it itself a thought?”
一、 「有心」:我们居住的思维迷宫
Part 1: “Mind at Work”: The Labyrinth of Thought We Inhabit

The “mind” we commonly experience is the continuous mental activity—analyzing, remembering, imagining, worrying. This book calls it “Mind at Work.” It is like a never-resting projector, casting images of thought onto the screen of our awareness and weaving them into coherent stories about “me,” about “the world,” about “past and future.” We get lost in these stories, mistaking the plot’s twists for real destiny, and the character’s joys and sorrows for our entire being.
This identification is the root of all distress. When we say “I am anxious,” “I am hurt,” “I must succeed,” we unreservedly identify with the story told by “Mind at Work,” imprisoning ourselves in the labyrinth of thought. This labyrinth seems complex, yet its exit is incredibly simple: Stop identifying.
二、 「无心」:那片如如不动的觉知背景
Part 2: “No Mind”: The Unmoving Background of Awareness
那么,如果我们不是那些来来去去的念头,我们究竟是什么?《论无心》引导我们进行一个直接的探究:在所有心理活动的背后,是否有一个从未参与其中、却使一切体验得以发生的「背景」?
请你直接感受:此刻,你知道你在阅读这些文字。这个「知道」本身,是一个念头吗?当愤怒或喜悦升起时,那个「觉察到情绪」的觉察力,本身有情绪吗?
这个「能知能觉」的背景,就是 「无心」。它没有内容,没有形状,没有故事。它如一面明镜,物来则照,物去则空,镜体本身却从不被影像所染。它如浩瀚深海,水面浪花汹涌,深处却寂静不动。
「无心」不是一种需要努力达成的特殊状态,而是我们最本质的存在方式。 修行不是要「制造」无念,而是要「认出」自己从来就是那片容纳所有念头、却不为所动的觉知空间。
So, if we are not the coming and going thoughts, what are we? On No Mind guides us in a direct inquiry: Behind all mental activity, is there not a “background” that never participates in it, yet makes all experience possible?
Feel this directly right now: You know you are reading these words. Is this “knowing” itself a thought? When anger or joy arises, is the awareness that notices the emotion—itself emotional?
This “knowing-aware” background is “No Mind.” It has no content, no form, no story. It is like a clear mirror: objects appear and are reflected, objects leave and it is empty—yet the mirror itself is never stained. It is like the vast deep sea: waves may rage on the surface, while profound stillness resides in its depths.
“No Mind” is not a special state to be achieved through effort, but our most fundamental way of being. Spiritual practice is not about “manufacturing” a thought-free state, but “recognizing” that we have always been the space of awareness that holds all thoughts without being moved.
三、 实践:浪花如何认出自己是海?
Part 3: Practice: How Does the Wave Recognize Itself as the Ocean?
理论是地图,体验才是抵达。如何从「有心」的迷梦中醒来,尝到「无心」的自由?
《论无心》提供了一个清晰的方法:撤回认同,安住为背景。
当下一次焦虑、愤怒或任何强烈的念头情绪来袭时,不要急于对抗或解决它们。尝试做一个内在的「退一步」:

觉察:注意到「有心」正在运作。一个故事正在上演。

抽离:温和地将你的自我感,从那个「正在愤怒的人」或「正在焦虑的思考者」的角色中,轻轻撤出。

就在你完成这个转变的瞬间,会发生一个奇迹:念头的压迫感开始松动。你不是消除了念头,而是你不再站在念头的暴风眼里。你站在了觉察的天空下。浪花在这一瞬认出了自己即是海洋。
这个练习的精髓在于:「无心」不是通过做更多的事达到的,而是通过停止做一件事——停止认同思考——而自然显露的。
Theory is the map; experience is the arrival. How do we awaken from the dream of “Mind at Work” and taste the freedom of “No Mind”?
On No Mind offers a clear method: Withdraw identification; abide as the background.
The next time anxiety, anger, or any strong thought or emotion strikes, do not rush to resist or solve it. Try an inner “step back”:

Awareness: Notice that “Mind at Work” is operating. A story is playing out.

Disidentification: Gently withdraw your sense of self from the role of “the person who is angry” or “the thinker who is anxious.”

Abiding: Turn your attention to that “background awareness” which knows all this is happening. Become the sky watching clouds pass, become the mirror reflecting images.
In the very moment you make this shift, a miracle occurs: the oppressive force of thought begins to loosen. You have not eliminated thoughts; you are no longer standing in the eye of the thought-storm. You are standing under the sky of awareness. In that instant, the wave recognizes itself as the ocean.
The essence of this practice is: “No Mind” is not attained by doing more, but by ceasing to do one thing—ceasing to identify with thinking—and thus allowing it to be naturally revealed.
